Dexter Cattle are truly the cattle of the future!  They are one of the smallest breeds of naturally small (not miniaturized) cattle in the world and have their origins in Ireland.  First imported into the US in 1905, the popularity of this breed has grown by leaps and bounds in the last 10 years or so.

Their popularity can be attributed to their many desirable traits - hardiness, ease in calving, intelligence, and their gentle demeanor.  They require less acreage for grazing and are excellent browsers.  Dexters are dual purpose animals - excellent for either beef or dairy.  Smaller in stature, bulls should be 38-44" (at the hip) and cows should be 36-42."  Most are horned, and the predominant color is black, with smaller numbers of dun or true red.

Their ease in handling, intelligence and hardiness make them very desirable animals to raise.  Gentleness and smaller size makes them very appealing to everyone - particularly to the smaller landowners with more limited acreage.  Dairy and beef are certainly their leading uses, but many folks purchase them to simply enjoy them and their tranquil nature.  There are a few owners who have made oxen of their Dexter steers.  Although small, they are extremely strong, and who could resist a matched pair of small oxen helping to work the farm - or pulling a wagon in a parade?
